GETTING STARTED OR LOOKING FOR CONNECTIONS?

Wicca 101

...then this is the place for you!  After receiving the same emails over and over - "Hi, I'm new to Wicca, where do I start?" and "I just moved into a new area and want to get hooked up with others of a like mind" - we decided to add a section to the site to answer these very questions.

Within Our Site
We suggest that you start with our
Wicca 101 section, which walks you through all the basics.   Just click on the forwards and backwards witch icons to navigate through the sections!

Books, Books, Books!
We always recommend reading as many books as you can to learn about the different traditions within the Craft.  You can find our suggestions on our
books page, but here are the three that we recommend most often:

Wicca:  A Guide for the Solitary Practitioner
by Scott Cunningham
The Spiral Dance by Starhawk
Teen Witch:  Wicca for a New Generation by Silver Ravenwolf

You can click on the title to order the book through our Amazon.com affiliation, or you can (hopefully) check one or all of them out from your local library.  You'll find, however, that these books serve as a great resource to your practice throughout your life, regardless of what level of expertise you attain.  At some point you'll probably want to add these books to your personal library!

Finding a Group
Many of our emails are from people looking to connect with others in their area.  While we don't maintain a list of contacts ourselves, we have a few suggestions for where you can start.  If you're in an urban area, there may be classes you can take or teachers you can study with - but as with anything else, take the time to find out about the teachers, their philosophy and their beliefs.  Check your local magical store or eclectic bookstore for fliers.

We've recommended this site before, and we'll probably recommend it a million more times before we're through, but here's the place to go for Wiccan info on the Internet: The Witches Voice.  They maintain extensive links to sites on a variety of topics all around the world, as well as a contact list sorted by location, and you're bound to find something in your area.

We also recommend contacting your local Unitarian Universalist church (if you have one in your area) to see to see if they have an active pagan/Wiccan group. There's a formal organization called CUUPS (Covenant of Unitarian Universalist Pagans) within the UU church, and you can learn more about them at www.cuups.org. If you're in the San Diego area, you can sign up for an email event notification list for a UU-affiliated pagan group that Lee occasionally leads ritual for at SDPagansUU. Finally, visit the Covenant of the Goddess (COG) website to find out if they are putting on public rituals in your area for upcoming celebrations.

Spellwork
Wicca involves much more than casting spells, and there's some basic education about the religion itself that you need to have before you start casting spells left and right.  Remember, you should try to resolve things on the physical plane before turning to spells. And PLEASE remember that you should never use magick to bind someone else's free will - you'd be surprised at all the emails we get from confused people wanting us to tell them how to "make" someone fall in love with them. There are consequences for actions, so be sure you understand the basics before you move on to advanced stuff like spell casting. And please be aware that as a volunteer-run website, we simply do not have the resources to write and send spells to people who email us requesting spells. If you get stuck writing your own and have a specific question, we'd be glad to try to help.

In Closing
If you have other questions, please visit our general FAQs and our Wicca FAQs.  And you can always email us if you still need some help finding what you're looking for. For now, start with Wicca 101 to get your feet wet….
